Thanks, Julie! I’m glad this resonates with your experience, and yeah, I think you’re right about ‘voice’. I always resisted committing to a unitary, identifiable voice, because I wanted the freedom to be able to write however I wanted or as a given project might demand. It’s for this reason that I often think of myself as a dilettante rather than a professional poet. Dilletantes have more fun!

We put so much emphasis on finding our voice but in a sense that’s slightly misleading. You don’t want that voice to carry too much baggage. That’s why I like haiku- they leave less room for the ego to intrude.
