Based on this excerpt, “Listen, Liberal” seems like a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how and why New Deal- and Great Society-style liberalism lost out to the New Democrats. Thomas Frank talks about how a focus on social issues such as abortion rights and LGBT rights, to the near-exclusion of more traditional concerns about economic rights, is a good fit for corporations and the technocrats who champion them. It seems to me that it has also enabled liberals to develop our own category of the undeserving poor: not “welfare queens” and “thugs”, but anyone unenlightened enough not to share our new-found social values, which more often than not translates to anyone not fortunate enough to have gone to college. So it makes it even more OK to just focus on creating a better meritocracy (as if!) and not worry about those who fall through the cracks.
